“Valentine’s Day?” remarked a friend of ours the other day, “Isn’t the whole occasion kind of meh?” Shelf Life’s response: not while brownies retain even the smallest crumb of allure. Every year at this time Shelf Life goes on a serious brownie hunt; recently we ordered up (from Ottawa) a Carolina’s Box Of Goodness gift package. The pretty box contains an artisanal chocolate fudge brownie plus a small jar of dulce de leche. Carolina Foresti is a Brazilian-born custom cake baker who trained at Café Boulud in New York and whose signature brownies derive from a family recipe. Each batch is made from premium Belgian chocolate, Canada Grade AA butter, Ontario eggs, and Madagascar bourbon vanilla. The accompanying fleur de sel – dulce de leche is also made from all-natural ingredients. Shelf Life took one bite of the brownie and concluded: no meh here. This is a fresh, perfectly chewy, fully loaded treat, so rich we cut it into pieces and enjoyed it all day. In the world of desserts, the word ‘decadent’ is overused, so Shelf Life will abstain – right after we finish this decadent bowl of vanilla ice cream and brownie slice drizzled with warm, caramelly dulce de leche. Carolina’s delivers ideal Valentine’s Day delectables in the mail, for only $12.50. It must be love.

Ottawa Tea Festival

Ottawa Tea Festival

What: The second annual festival in Ottawa devoted to all things tea, with most of Ottawa’s independent tea retailers on hand selling teas and gift baskets (several pairing tea with locally made chocolates and even brownies.) Presentations will be made hourly at the festival on everything from a traditional Japanese tea ceremony to Bollywood dance.

Vendors: 25 booths, from the Tea Association of Canada to Gatineau’s Cha Yi tea house.

Special note: Boozybrownies, the newest collection from Ottawa’s Carolina Foresti, will be available at the show and would make great Christmas gifts for the non-teetotallers on your list; $2 each or $12 for an attractive box of six, they include Bailey’s Irish Coffee, Amaretto and Bourbon Dulce de Leche (dulce de leche recipe from Foresti’s native Brazil).

Where: The Ottawa Convention Centre (Sunday workshops at other ByWard Market locations.)

When: The festival goes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1. Four additional workshops, including a $45 five-course tea-and-food pairing dinner, will be held on Sunday, Dec. 2.

Admission/parking: Admission is $15. Pay parking is available at the Rideau Centre (which is also on dozens of bus routes).
